How to Enable Logout on No Keystroke in Windward System Five

Windward System Five (version 6 and higher) includes a security feature that automatically logs out inactive users after 5-minutes of no keyboard activity. This helps protect sensitive data and maintain compliance with security policies. Follow the steps below to configure this setting.

1. User-Level Security vs Admin-Level Security and No Keystroke Rules

  • If the user has an 'admin-level' of security then the logout on no keystroke is mandatory for that user when System Five is integrated with payment card processing and/or if System Five is being used to store credit card data.
  • Users with 'user-level' security will not trigger the logout on no keystroke if System Five is integrated with payment cards.

In the User and Security Setup, there are security options indicated with a '#' at the end - if any of these '#' settings are enabled then that user is classified as an admin user and will have to re-login after 15-minutes of inactivity. The admin security settings are indicated in Figures 1 and 2 at the bottom of this document.

NOTE: If the Logout on no Keystroke setting is enabled then all users will be logged out after 5-minutes regardless of security settings.

2. Steps to Enable Logout on No Keystroke

Step 1: Open Windward System Five Setup Wizard

  1. Launch Windward System Five.
  2. Navigate to Setup Tools from the Navigator.

Step 2: Access Security Settings

  1. In the Setup Tools window, select Users and Security Settings.

Step 3: Configure Timeout in the Master Security Tab (+ Other Security Recommendations)

  1. Logout on no Keystroke' is under the Master Security tab.

3. Security Recommendations

  • There are 5 settings in the Master Security tab with a "#" at the end that are recommended to turn off if a user is not an admin.

  • There is 1 setting in the Accounts Receivable tab with a "#" at the end that is recommended to turn off if a user is not an admin.

  • Please go through all other tabs to ensure any security setting with a "#" at the end is turned off if a user is not an admin.

  • Users that are also administrators may want to create an additional, non-admin account. This would be performed by copying the admin-user and then turning off the admin-settings for this new account. This new user can be used to perform day-to-day, non-admin operations without the mandatory logout on no keystroke option being triggered (only mandatory for admin-level users, see section 1)

Important Notes

  • This feature only monitors keyboard activity, not mouse movement.
  • Ensure all users are aware of the timeout setting to prevent accidental logouts during long tasks.
