System Five On Cloud Disconnects Several Times Per Day. Solution 2.
Check the Windows Error Logs and look for the following Error:
The disconnects are occurring because the updater within the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client is not able to uninstall a previous version of the App.
You can see that the update is available from within the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client from the green dot at the top right side of the screen.
If you place your mouse pointer on the green dot you will see the message that an update is available..
No matter what I did I couldn't update or uninstall the Remote Desktop app, because the original installer package didn’t exist. The installer package had to be named the same and be the exact same version for Windows to recognize it as a valid installer.
The only solution I could find was to download a repair tool from Microsoft Support that would allow us to force an uninstall or install.
Download the tool from the following link:
Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed (microsoft.com)
Run the program : MicrosoftProgram_Install_and_Uninstall.meta.diagcab
This is a Microsoft Cabinet file which will run like an EXE or MSI file.
Click Next
Click on Uninstalling.
The program will begin looking for any installed programs that may be having an issue.
This will take a few minutes.
When the program finishes it’s checks, you will be presented with a list of installed programs.
Find Remote Desktop in the list.
Highlight it and click Next.
Click Yes, try uninstall
The program will run it’s routines to clean up the issue.
Once the cleanup routines have completed, you will get this screen.
You can click on either “Close the troubleshooter” or click the Close button to exit.
Check the properties of the Remote Desktop shortcut to see where previous version was installed.
Older version may have been installed in a user profile which would contribute to this issue.
Example: "C:\Users\sales\AppData\Local\Apps\Remote Desktop\msrdcw.exe"
Highlight the Remote Desktop folder and delete it. If you see more than one (eg. Remote Desktop Old) delete both.
Restart the computer.
Now you can re-install the Remote Desktop Client.
I would recommend downloading and installing from the installation package to ensure that the full download is completed. It can be downloaded from:
I would also recommend installing the app for all users when prompted. That way it will be installed into the Program Files folder instead of a specific user profile’s folder. This will prevent these types of errors from occurring in the future.
